Once your Town Clerk verifies that you are eligible to vote, they will mail your absentee ballot and voting instructions to the address listed on your application.

WHEN ARE ABSENTEE BALLOTS MAILED?

WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT?
Your completed absentee ballot must be received by your Town Clerk by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day to be counted. Return your ballot in the envelope provided with your absentee ballot. Be sure to print and sign your name on the return envelope before returning it.

WHAT IF I REQUESTED AN ABSENTEE BALLOT BUT WANT TO VOTE IN PERSON?
If your Town Clerk receives your absentee ballot before Election Day, election officials will record that you have returned an absentee ballot. If you later decide you want to vote in person, you must go to your Town Clerk's office before 10:00 a.m. on Election Day to request that your absentee ballot be withdrawn before you can vote at your polling place.
If your absentee ballot arrives on Election Day, election officials will compare it to the official voter checklist after the polls close. If records show that you already voted in person, your absentee ballot will not be counted. These procedures help ensure that each voter casts only one ballot.
IF I HAVE AN ILLNESS OR DISABILITY, MAY SOMEONE RETURN MY ABSENTEE BALLOT FOR ME?
Yes. Connecticut law allows certain individuals to return an absentee ballot on behalf of a voter with an illness or disability, including:
- an immediate family member who lives with the voter, such as a spouse, child, parent, or sibling
- a caregiver, including a doctor or nurse
- a town police officer
- a Registrar of Voters, Deputy Registrar of Voters, or Assistant Registrar of Voters

HOW DO TOWN CLERKS HELP KEEP ABSENTEE BALLOTS SECURE?
When your Town Clerk receives your absentee ballot, they verify that the ballot identification number on the return envelope matches the one on your application. The ballot remains sealed and is securely stored until it is processed according to state law.
Procedures are also in place to ensure that no voter can cast both an absentee ballot and an in-person ballot.
HOW DO I KNOW MY ABSENTEE BALLOT REMAINS PRIVATE?
Absentee ballots are counted publicly by trained election officials following Connecticut law. Ballots are counted together with many others, helping protect voter privacy. Connecticut law also makes it a crime for anyone to improperly determine how a person voted.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO SIGN MY RETURN ENVELOPE?
You must sign the outside of your absentee ballot return envelope before your ballot can be counted. If your signature is missing, your Town Clerk will make their best effort to contact you so you can correct the issue before the deadline. Including your phone number, email address, or both on your absentee ballot application can help your Town Clerk contact you if needed.
WHAT IS SIGNATURE CURING?
Signature curing allows voters to correct a missing signature on their absentee ballot return envelope so their ballot can be counted. Only absentee ballots missing the voter's signature on the return envelope are eligible to be cured. If your signature is missing, your Town Clerk will make their best effort to contact you by phone or email. You may correct the missing signature in person at your Town Clerk's office until 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
